What Is a Fractional CFO?

A fractional CFO is an outside finance leader who works with your business part time, on a regular schedule, instead of joining as a full-time employee. They turn your numbers into forecasts, budgets and plans so you can make decisions. They do not replace your bookkeeper, and they do not prepare tax returns.

What is a fractional CFO in plain terms?

CFO stands for chief financial officer. In a large company that person sits at the top of the finance team and answers one question: where is the money going, and where should it go next?

A fractional CFO does that job for a smaller business without being on the payroll full time. "Fractional" just means a fraction of a person. You get a share of their time, on a set rhythm, for a fixed fee. You also hear the terms part-time CFO, virtual CFO and outsourced CFO. In everyday use they often describe the same arrangement.

The role looks forward. A bookkeeper records what already happened. A controller checks that the records are right and that the month closes properly. A CFO uses those records to plan what comes next. We call that sequence Record it, Control it, Drive it, and you can read how the first two fit in our bookkeeping and fractional controller pages.

Who is a fractional CFO for?

The usual fit is a business that has outgrown "is the bank balance positive?" but has no need, or no budget, for a full-time executive. Typical situations:

  • The owner makes pricing, hiring or spending decisions mostly by feel.
  • Someone has asked for a forecast, a budget or investor-style reporting and nobody on the team knows how to build one.
  • The business is thinking about a loan, outside funding, a purchase or a sale.
  • The books are in good shape but nobody turns them into a plan.

We cover the signs in more detail in when to hire a fractional CFO. English Oak Financial works with start-ups and small growing businesses in most industries. We do not work with not-for-profit organizations.

What does a fractional CFO not do?

This matters as much as the list above.

  • Tax returns. We do not prepare tax returns. We work alongside your CPA or tax professional and give them clean numbers.
  • Audit. We do not audit financial statements.
  • Investment advice. We do not give investment advice. Planning how to invest in your own business, such as a hire or an equipment purchase, is a business decision. Advice about stocks, funds or personal portfolios is a different matter, and we leave it to others.
  • Day-to-day bookkeeping. A CFO relies on accurate books. If yours are behind, catch-up bookkeeping usually comes first.

This is general information about a type of service, not tax or investment advice.

How is a fractional CFO different from a controller?

A controller makes sure the numbers are right: reconciliations, month-end close, internal controls. A CFO uses the numbers to plan and advise. Small businesses sometimes need the controller work first, because forecasts built on shaky books mislead. Our comparison of controller vs CFO sets out the duties side by side.

What English Oak Financial charges

English Oak Financial starts its fractional CFO service from $2,500 a month. Pricing is custom to your business and charged as one fixed monthly fee that includes all the work required. For published prices from other providers, each cited, see how much a fractional CFO costs. Our pricing page has the details.

How does the work usually run?

Work runs on a monthly reporting cycle. In general, a CFO builds on closed books to update the forecast, compare results with the budget and advise the owner. A first step is a free introductory consultation. The comparison with a salaried hire is covered in fractional CFO vs full-time CFO.

Common questions

What is a fractional CFO?

A fractional CFO is an outside finance leader who works for your business on a part-time, recurring basis. They handle forecasting, budgeting, planning and reporting without being a full-time employee.

Is a fractional CFO the same as a virtual CFO?

Often, yes. Part-time, virtual, outsourced and fractional are often used for the same idea of shared executive-level finance help. Ask any provider exactly what is included, because the label does not tell you.

Does a fractional CFO do my bookkeeping or taxes?

No. At English Oak Financial the bookkeeping is a separate service, and we do not prepare tax returns. We work alongside your CPA or tax professional.

Can a very small business use a fractional CFO?

Yes, if there are decisions to plan for. A business with simple finances and no questions about growth, funding or pricing may only need bookkeeping. The worth it guide covers when it is not worth paying for.
