Fractional CFO Cost: What Providers Publish
Fractional CFO cost, as published by providers, runs from about $3,000 to $15,000 a month, depending on which provider you ask and how much work is included. Pilot and SDO CPA both publish ranges, and both sell the service. Treat them as vendor figures, not an independent survey.
How much does a fractional CFO cost per month?
Nobody publishes one official price, so the honest answer is a range from the people who sell the service. We opened two public cost guides on 2026-10-17 and recorded exactly what they say.
| Source (date published) | Published monthly figure | Context stated by the source |
|---|---|---|
| Pilot (August 2025) | $3,000 to $12,000 | Described as an average range |
| Pilot (August 2025) | $5,000 to $8,000 | Described as the typical average for early to mid-stage companies |
| SDO CPA (January 2026) | $3,500 to $15,000 | Summary of its retainer tiers |
| SDO CPA (January 2026) | $3,500 to $5,000 | Its startup tier, for businesses with $500K to $2M revenue |
Both of these are vendor-published figures. Each company sells fractional CFO services, so treat them as what the market asks, not as an independent survey. The two guides do not agree with each other, and SDO's own page shows a slightly different starting figure in different places. That spread is itself useful: it tells you to compare scopes, not headlines.
What is the fractional CFO hourly rate?
Pilot's guide does not state an hourly figure. SDO CPA's guide lists $175 to $450 an hour in a section on hourly rates, which it calls less common. Our CFO service is priced as one fixed monthly fee that includes all the work required. Some providers use a monthly retainer rather than hours. A retainer makes the cost predictable, but ask what is included so a low number does not hide a narrow scope.
What makes the price go up or down?
These are the factors that matter in practice, whoever the provider is.
- Scope. A monthly forecast and board-style report costs more than a quarterly planning call.
- State of the books. A CFO cannot forecast from records that are months behind. If the books need rebuilding, that is catch-up bookkeeping, quoted separately by condition and complexity.
- Complexity. More entities, more revenue streams, inventory, or a lender or investor asking for detailed reporting all add work.
- Frequency. Weekly involvement can cost more than monthly.
- Who does the work. Some firms put the principal on the engagement. Others use a team. Ask which applies.
- Special projects. Preparing for funding, a sale or an acquisition is a project on top of the regular cycle at some firms. Ask whether it sits inside the fee or beside it.
How does that compare with a full-time CFO?
For reference, the same two sources describe what a salaried hire costs. Pilot says a full-time CFO can cost more than $250,000 per year. SDO CPA gives $250,000 to $500,000 or more annually in its introduction, $250K to $600K in its key takeaways, and $250,000 to $600,000 or more as an itemized Year 1 total, which includes salary, benefits and recruiting. Both are vendor-published and neither tells you what your area pays. A fractional arrangement is built for businesses that need the thinking without a full executive salary. The full comparison, including where a salaried CFO wins, is in fractional CFO vs full-time CFO.
Why do fractional CFO rates differ so much?
Two reasons show up often. First, providers define the job differently. One includes a monthly forecast, a budget review and a call. Another includes only advice by the hour. Second, providers target different customers. A guide written for venture-backed companies can quote higher than one written for a local services business.
What pricing models do fractional CFOs use?
Providers use a few common models. We describe the models in general terms, not as a ranking of providers.
| Model | How it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | A set monthly fee for a defined scope | What is excluded, and the terms for ending it |
| Hourly | You pay for time used | Costs that drift upward when you have a busy month |
| Project | A fixed fee for one piece of work, such as a funding pack | What happens when the project grows |
| Hybrid | A retainer plus project fees | Whether projects are really extra |
English Oak Financial uses one fixed monthly fee. Work runs on a monthly reporting cycle, and the fee includes all the work required.
What does a fractional CFO cost compared with doing nothing?
This is the hard question, and nobody can answer it with a single return-on-investment figure. Revenue gained, profit gained and cash freed up are three different things, and a guide that blends them into one number is not telling you much. We keep them apart here.
An illustration with invented numbers, to show the logic only:
Example (illustrative, not a result from any client): a business sells a product at $50 and its cost to make and ship is $40. A planning review shows the shipping cost per order has crept up, and a change brings it down by $2 per order. On 1,000 orders a month that is $2,000 more profit a month. Profit improved, and revenue did not move. Cash is a third number again: if the change means paying a shipping partner sooner, cash could tighten even while profit rises.
The point is that "worth it" depends on what decision the work changes, and whether you act on it. We do not claim any outcome. Our is a fractional CFO worth it guide walks through the test.
When is a fractional CFO not worth the money?
Honestly, in several situations.
- Your books are not reliable yet. Pay for bookkeeping or cleanup first. Forecasts built on bad records are expensive guesses.
- Your finances are simple and stable. If you have no pricing, funding, hiring or growth decisions ahead, monthly bookkeeping and a tax professional may be all you need.
- You will not use the output. A beautiful forecast that nobody reads changes nothing.
- The fee is a large share of what the decision is worth. If the biggest decision you face is small, a smaller engagement or a one-off conversation may fit better.
- You need a person in the building every day. A part-time arrangement is not an employee.
If the first point is you, our bookkeeping service is one place to start, and the signs it is time for a CFO guide explains what to look for.
What English Oak Financial charges
English Oak Financial starts its fractional CFO service from $2,500 a month. Pricing is custom to your business and charged as one fixed monthly fee that includes all the work required. Our controller service starts from $1,500 and bookkeeping from $500 a month. Details are on the pricing page and the fractional CFO service page.
What should a written quote spell out?
A good quote is boring and specific. It names the services, the reports you will receive, the meeting rhythm, the fee and what triggers a change in the fee. It also says what is not included. If a quote does not say, ask. Our exclusions are tax return preparation, audit and investment advice, and the same plain statement should be available from any provider you consider.
How do I compare quotes from different providers?
Ask each one the same questions, and ask for them in writing.
- What exactly is included each month, and what is billed on top?
- Who does the work, and who will I speak to?
- How often will we meet, and what reports will I get?
- How are special projects such as a funding application priced?
- How do I end the arrangement, and how much notice is needed?
Then compare the answers, not the totals. The how to hire a fractional CFO guide has the longer list, which applies to us as much as anyone.

Common questions
How much does a fractional CFO cost per month?
According to the vendor guides we opened, published ranges run from about $3,000 to $15,000 a month. Pilot gives $3,000 to $12,000 and SDO CPA gives $3,500 to $15,000.
What is the part time CFO cost for a small business?
It depends on scope, but SDO CPA lists $3,500 to $5,000 a month for its startup tier, aimed at businesses with $500K to $2M in revenue. Pilot calls $5,000 to $8,000 typical for early to mid-stage companies. Both are vendor figures.
Fractional CFO or full-time CFO: which costs less per year?
Published figures for a salaried CFO start at about $250,000 a year or more according to both Pilot and SDO CPA, so a monthly retainer is a smaller commitment. Whether it is the right choice depends on how much finance leadership you need, not only on price.
